Lit. “aquele que ouve ou faz ouvir”. Alguém que escuta os ensinamentos do Buda, os transmite oralmente e os pratica com vista à sua libertação individual do saṃsāra, isto é, a obtenção do nível de arhat. Os śrāvakas são praticantes do veículo base, fundamentado nas quatro nobres verdades do primeiro girar da roda do Dharma. Ver também: Śrāvakayāna.

One who hears the teachings of the Buddha, practices them, and transmits them to others with a view to his or her personal liberation from samsara, rather than the perfect enlightenment of buddhahood. The characteristic goal of the Shravaka is Arhatship, a personal, individual liberation from samsara, rather than the perfect enlightenment of Buddhahood for the sake of all beings.
