O objetivo pode ser entendido como o benefício, bem-estar, libertação do sofrimento e iluminação, e é considerado duplo porque se refere a 1) nós próprios (rang don) e 2) aos outros (gzhan don). Muitas vezes entendido no sentido último em que objetivo de nós próprios ser alcançado pela realização da vacuidade, o dharmakāya, e o objetivo dos outros ser alcançado pela compaixão manifesta enquanto rūpakāya.
