grand érudit, poète et dramaturge bouddhiste du IIe siècle de notre ère. [POL, 1999]

érudit hindou converti au Grand Véhicule du bouddhisme sous l'influence d'Âryadeva. Parfois identifié comme l'âcârya Shura (ou : Vîra). Poète aussi important dans l'histoire de la littérature sanskrite que dans l'histoire du bouddhisme, il est connu pour sa version de la vie du Bouddha appelée Buddhacarita. [TDPQ, 2009]

Aśvaghoṣa

Originally a Hindu scholar who converted to Mahāyāna Buddhism under the influence of Āryadeva. He is sometimes identified with the master Śūra (dpa' bo). A great poet, as important in the history of Sanskrit literature as in the history of Buddhism, he is celebrated as the author of a celebrated account of the Buddha's life, the Buddhacharita.
