The followers of the first teachings of Secret Mantra propagated in Tibet by the great master Padmasambhava in the 8th century. Patrul Rinpoche belonged to this school. [WOMPT, 1998]

Referred to also as the Nyingma or Ancient school, the original tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Its adherents study and practice the tantras (and their related teachings) that were translated in the first period between the introduction of the Buddhadharma to Tibet in the eighth century and the period of New Translation inaugurated by Rinchen Zangpo (958-1051). Lit. “a Antiga”. A Escola das Antigas Traduções, a primeira tradição do budismo tibetano, foi assim batizada quando do surgimento das tradições das novas traduções durante o séc. X. A escola Nyingma mantém as suas linhagens e vitalidade até hoje, e os seus seguidores estudam e praticam os tantras — e os seus ensinamentos correlativos — segundo as traduções feitas por tradutores como Vairocana e Nanam Yeshe De, sob patrocínio imperial e supervisão de paṇḍitas indianos como Śāntarakṣita e Vimalamitra — durante o primeiro período de introdução do Dharma no Tibete no Séc. VIII. Além dos textos desta fase de tradução, esta escola também baseia a sua prática nos textos que vieram a ser revelados posteriormente, os termas, legados por Guru Rinpoche aos seus vinte e cinco discípulos, como Yeshe Tsogyal, o Rei Trisong Detsen, Vairocana, Namkhai Nyingpo, etc.

Nota: O nome da escola é Nyingma e os seus adeptos são os nyingmapas.
