Sânscrito:

Português:

śamatha, paz mental, permanecer em paz, calmo permanecer.

Lit. “permanecer ou repousar na paz ou calma”. Prática de meditação em que a mente permanece focada no objeto de concentração por meio da atenção plena. É a base de todas as práticas de meditação, e tem como resultado a pacificação gradual dos pensamentos discursivos e das emoções negativas. [STLX]

"The word "śamatha," or "zhi gnas" in Tibetan, is actually “peace” or “peaceful” — it actually means “to dwell”, “to rest”, “be able to dwell in peace”." (JKR - 2019-06- Śamatha Retreat)

English:

calm abiding, sustained calm, quiescence, tranquility

The basis of all concentrations. "The distraction of the mind by other objects having been calmed (zhi), the mind stays (gnas) without wavering in concentration." DICT. [WOMPT]

The basis of all concentrations, a calm, undistracted state of unwavering concentration. [TLWF 2011] [NLF 2005] [ZT 2006]

Essentially a concentration in which the mind remains unmoving on an object of focus. It is a state of calm abiding which though of great importance is itself incapable of overcoming ignorance and the conception of a self. See also Vipaśyanā. [TPQ]
