Trata-se dos três planos da existência: o mundo dos seres humanos e animais que habitam a superfície da terra, o reino dos deuses e espíritos nos céus e esferas superiores, e o reino dos nāgas, etc., nas regiões subterrâneas. Sinónimo de 'jig rten gsum.
Embora seja por vezes traduzido como "três mundos" ou "três reinos", mas esta opção talvez não seja ideal, uma vez que estas formulações podem causar confusão com os três mundos do desejo, da forma, da não-forma,(khams gsum). Embora o termo sinónimo 'jig rten gsum, segundo fontes tibetanas, tenha ambos os sentidos, esse não parece ser o caso de sa gsum, que se refere apenas aos três níveis.
