Irmão do rei do Dharma Rei Tri Ralpachen. Quando este último foi assassinado pelos seus ministros bönpos no ano de 906 (ou 838*), Langdarma tornou-se rei. Ele perseguiu o budismo e quase conseguiu erradicá-lo do Tibete, especialmente na sua forma monástica.
