Uma das escolas da Nova Tradução (Sarma). Fundada por Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), tem como líder o Detentor do Trono do Mosteiro de Ganden e como representante mais destacado S.S. o Dalai Lama.
Embora seja habitual chamar esta escola de "Gelugpa" mesmo entre os tibetanos, tecnicamente, essa é uma forma dita "nominalizada" e refere-se aos aderentes a essa escola; isto é, trata-se da escola "Gelug" seguida pelos "gelugpas".
